In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a cornerstone of Evogene’s advanced reproductive technology. The process begins with the OPU and collection of oocytes from the donor. These oocytes are then matured in a controlled laboratory environment and fertilised 20–24 hours later with carefully selected semen under controlled laboratory conditions.

Depending on your breeding goals, we offer flexible fertilisation options—including fresh, frozen-thawed, conventional and sexed semen. The team process the semen to maximise outcomes and minimise wastage. The developing embryos are cultured in optimal conditions for seven days, after which the highest quality embryos are transferred into recipients

How are oocytes fertilised in the lab?

In the laboratory, oocytes collected via OPU are carefully fertilised under highly controlled conditions to give each egg the best chance of developing into a healthy embryo. A critical part of this process is semen preparation.
Before fertilisation:

  • Semen is thoroughly processed to remove cryoprotectants, seminal plasma, and any contaminants that could affect fertilisation or embryo development.
  • Only the highest-quality sperm—with optimal motility, morphology, and vitality—are selected for use.
  • Sperm are added to the oocytes at the precise concentration needed to maximise fertilisation while minimising polyspermy.

This meticulous preparation ensures that every oocyte is exposed to sperm in ideal conditions, stacking the odds in favour of successful fertilisation and high-quality embryo development.

How long does the IVF and IVC process take?

The IVF and IVC process is precise and takes several days to ensure the best outcomes for embryo development. A typical timeline looks like this:

  • Day -1: OPU (Ovum Pick-Up) – Eggs are collected from the donor via ultrasound-guided aspiration.
  • Day 0: IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) – The collected oocytes are fertilised in the laboratory with carefully prepared, high-quality sperm.
  • Days 1–7/8: IVC (In Vitro Culture) – Fertilised oocytes are cultured under controlled conditions, allowing embryos to develop to the blastocyst stage.
